A YouTube video brief should make the video's promise clear before filming starts. It tells the creator or editor who the video serves, what it must explain and which material is needed to support the answer.
The original template below is designed for an educational business video. It includes a completed fictional example so you can use the structure rather than merely read advice about planning.
Field 1: audience and problem
Write: “This video is for who need to but are confused by ___.”
Completed example: “This video is for small-business owners who need to brief a video editor but are confused about what to include.”
Choose one central problem. A video trying to explain scripting, lighting, pricing, contracts and every social platform at once can lose its main purpose before the outline is complete.
Field 2: promise and title
Write one sentence describing the result a viewer can reasonably expect. Example: “By the end, you will have a four-field brief ready to adapt for your next project.”
Possible title: “How to Write a Video Editing Brief: A Four-Field Example.” YouTube explains that search considers how a video's title, description and content relate to a query, among other factors. An accurate promise is more useful than a keyword-rich title that the video does not fulfill. YouTube: Performance and discovery FAQ
Field 3: the outline
Use this example sequence: show the finished brief; explain the audience field; define the problem; identify the proof or demonstration; choose the next step; review the completed example.
Write the key answer under each section before adding jokes, transitions or branding. The outline should still be understandable when decorative material is removed.
Mark any statement that needs a current source or a real demonstration. Do not leave a statistic in the script merely because it sounds authoritative.
Field 4: evidence and assets
List the footage, screenshots, diagrams, permissions and source documents needed. In the example, use a fictional project sheet rather than exposing a client's confidential information.
For a comparison, capture equivalent examples. For a tutorial, show the step you describe. For a claim about a current platform feature, verify the actual product or official documentation before recording.
Keep filenames and versions clear so the editor does not publish an outdated screen or unapproved customer image.
Field 5: opening and next step
Sample opening: “Here is the brief we are going to build. It has four fields, and each prevents a different kind of confusion.”
Sample closing: “Use the blank version for one project, then check whether another person can understand the intended viewer and demonstration without asking for context.”
Choose a supported next-step link or end screen rather than assuming every description or format allows the same clickable destination. YouTube documents differences between linking surfaces. Sharing links with your audience on YouTube
Field 6: review and measurement
Before publishing, check accuracy, permissions, readable text, intelligible audio and whether the title matches the actual answer. Afterward, review attention and relevant next-step activity over a defined window.
Penmowu lists YouTube-related service quantities, but they do not replace the brief, substantiate the video's claims or prove that the audience learned from it. Keep any service activity separate from editorial evaluation. Penmowu public service catalog
A strong brief does not guarantee a successful upload. It gives the team a shared definition of what the video needs to accomplish—and makes it easier to recognize whether the finished work actually does it.
